Start with a written treatment plan and a clinician-confirmed schedule. Then arrange the trip around it. Booking a holiday first can leave too little time for assessment, treatment changes or follow-up.
Use this total-cost worksheet while comparing options. It works with your estimates and does not require personal information.
Before buying flights or reserving a hotel
| Confirm | Ask for | Keep with your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Treating team and location | Names, roles and exact premises | The evidence and unresolved credential questions |
| Treatment scope | Included procedures and temporary/final restorations | Itemized estimate and currency |
| Required visits | Proposed dates, stay and possible return stages | A schedule approved by the treating clinician |
| Changes | What happens if the examination changes the plan | Deposit, cancellation and additional-work terms |
| Follow-up | Who handles reviews at the clinic and at home | Contact names, fees and records arrangements |
A clinic’s availability and your clinical suitability are separate questions. Ask what remote review can establish and what remains subject to examination. Our timeline guide lists the stages to clarify.
Budget transport and lodging for all visits
Price the dates and route you actually expect to use. Include airport or border transport, accommodation, meals, a companion if needed and any later trips. Confirm pickup arrangements with the named provider; do not assume transport is included because it appears on a clinic’s website.
Ask who pays if you need to stay longer or return for a revision. Keep planned follow-up separate from a contingency allowance. A warranty may cover particular corrective work without covering travel, lodging or a different dentist’s fees.
Check documents and travel requirements with official sources
Entry and re-entry requirements depend on citizenship, mode of travel and personal circumstances. Check the US State Department’s Mexico information and the relevant authorities for your situation before booking. Do not rely on an old itinerary or assume a document accepted at a land crossing is sufficient for a flight.
Recovery is part of the schedule
The CDC cautions that vacation activities can interfere with recovery after treatment. Ask your clinician about activity and travel restrictions for the proposed procedure. A destination’s beaches or hotels do not establish that those activities are appropriate during recovery.
Prepare the handoff before departure
Ask the treating dentist which records you will receive and how a dentist at home can use them. Confirm a point of contact for questions, instructions for suspected problems and the written revision policy. A promised introduction to a local dentist is not a confirmed appointment or agreement to provide follow-up.
Keep a copy of the approved plan, invoices and contact details accessible while traveling. Arrange the clinical document transfer with the care team rather than sending records through a marketing form.
Request help comparing your quote and travel assumptions. MxSmiles is free for patients and may receive a partner-clinic referral fee. Clinical decisions remain with your treating professionals.
